| In May of
1979 my dad took
me to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time. I
can
still remember parking a few blocks north
of the track and hearing the echo of Indycars in the distance.
I
remember entering under the stands on the main straightaway and going
as close as I could to the track, looking down toward turn 4 and seeing
Poncho Carter come by at almost 200 mph. I was hooked for
life.
Every year since then, except for one, I have made my way
down to
the Brickyard for the 500. To this day I still get
as
excited as I was that first trip there. I have been fortunate
enough to see drivers like Mears, Andretti, Unser, Rutherford,
Johncock, Rahal, Sneva and of course A.J. Foyt. I can
remember
getting nudged for paying more attention to what was going on in the
Snakepit than the action on the track and I can remember the times of
huddling under a plastic bag in the stands as the Indiana monsoons
pounded us from above. The place is overflowing with history
and
race weekend seems to fly by when I visit. If you have an
interest in any form of racing, make a trip to Indy at least once in
your lifetime, you won't be disappointed. In the early years
I
didn't take allot of pictures but here are some that I have taken from
the past few years in and around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. |
